For low risk prostate cancer, Active Surveillance to monitor the cancer is often preferred over surgery or radiation. A downside to Active Surveillance is the need to repeat prostate biopsies over time. A new study indicates that adding an MRI of the prostate can reduce the need for follow up biopsies while missing only a small number of significant cancers (7.2%). Additionally, biomarkers (blood tests, genetic tests) may further reduce the need for MRI and prostate biopsies. These techniques need further investigation but are exciting news for one of the most common cancers in men.
