Finasteride/Dutasteride do not make prostate cancer worse

Manuel S. Eisenberg

Alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride, dutasteride) help prevent growth of the prostate and worsening of urinary symptoms in men. Studies have shown that these medications can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer in up to 25% of men, however there has been some concern that it can lead to higher grade prostate cancer when cancer is found. A recent study In Europe showed that in nearly 6000 men on these medications, there was no increase in death. This study demonstrates that finasteride and dutasteride can be used safely in the fight against prostate symptoms and in prostate cancer prevention.
